Text Box: Do you know that beautiful green triangle that is lined with wonderful Oak Trees on Mayview Rd.? University Park residents have been getting together to discuss a plan for that area, to promote outdoor recreation for a variety of age groups. We would like to improve this small area park with play equipment and other features identified through resident Text Box: input. We are committed to assisting with planning and fundraising for this play area. Our next step in planning is to meet with a representative of the Parks and Recreation Department and Dan Douglas of the Urban Design Center to discuss our ideas. If you are interested in becoming involved in this park in any way please email Lisa Meeks at Text Box: Mayview Green Park

Text Box: UPHA Home of The Month by Sallie Ricks
Text Box: University Park’s Home of the Month for April was the home of Terry Kauffman, 407 Furches St. Terry administers UPHA’s Home of the Month Program, each month choosing a home and yard of distinction in the neighborhood. The chosen home is recognized with a sign in the yard. Terry has handled this program successfully for UPHA for several years and this month, at the urging of her friends, her home was recognized in April.
Terry recently painted her controversial PINK front door to a dark red along with other improvements to her home’s exterior but her real pride and joy is her yard and wildlife habitat Text Box: garden. Her yard has no formal grass and is naturally mulched. She has a fountain which provides water for the bird and urban wildlife and she keeps a variety of naturalized shrubs which provide food and cover for animals to raise their young. Last year she received Backyard Habitat Certification from the National Wildlife Federation.
The Backyard Habitat certification process educates children and adults about what individual homeowners can do to provide a diverse and balanced backyard ecosystem. Certification is a project families can work on together. To learn more about making your yard a Text Box: certified wildlife habitat go to nwf.org/ backyardwildlifehabitat/. If you would like to tour Terry’s yard or if you have a suggestion for a home of the month you may contact her at 612- 3303.
Terry is an artist and she creates pen and ink watercolors of animals and foliage found in her yard. She recently created and donated an original watercolor drawing of Pollock Place Park which was presented to Amy Baker to recognize her efforts at improving this neighborhood children’s playground.
Thanks, Terry for all you are doing to make University Park a better place to live!
